Abstract

Investigations by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Environment into the state and development of exhaust emission in Switzerland from 1950- 2000 show that private road traffic is the main cause of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and lead emissions. Around the year 2000, by which the Swiss exhaust regulations will have reached complete effectiveness, these emissions will have been reduced by half, despite traffic growth.
