Abstract

The possibilities for, and consequences of segregating freight transport and car transport upon the bottlenecks in the dutch road network are studied in this report. arguments which are considered are: (1) improvement in traffic flow/increase of capacity; (2) enhancement of traffic safety; (3) more efficient highway design; and (4) a more efficient road construction. An inventory is made of the following principles: (1) segregation on the same marked out road section: reconstruction of the transverse profile or construction of extra traffic lanes; (2) segregation on different marked out road sections by using existing highways or by construction of new highways and/or road sections; and (3) other solutions such as the prohibition of overtaking by lorries, possibilities for lorries on bus lanes, and ramp metering with priority for freight transport. As an example two case studies are reported.
