Abstract

This report recommends a set of criteria for the establishment, signing and marking of school and playground areas and zones in rural and urban environments. The document is intended to provide practitioners with an objective tool for assessing the need for school and playground areas and zones, to provide guidance to implement them effectively and to prioritize the locations that are the most in need for areas and zones. The guidelines are intended to support and supplement the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada. Road authorities should also consider other factors such as stakeholder concerns, sound engineering judgment and local procedures or policies when considering the use of school and playground areas and zones as a traffic safety tool.
