CO2-reduction due to ‘Drive Slow, Travel Fast’. In this study we estimate the potential reduction of CO2-emission due to the introduction of ‘Drive Slow, Travel Fast’. This concept allows for (i) the replacement of traffic lights by intersections with right-of-way or roundabouts and (ii) the redesigning of road sections. The research shows that 69% of all traffic lights and 17% of all urban roads in the Netherlands meet the criteria of Drive Slow, Travel Fast. Fully implementing this potential would lead to a yearly reduction of CO2-emission caused by road traffic with 16,5% (5,800 ktons). We expect that a yearly reduction of 340 ktons can be effectuated in 2010. This is about 1% of the total CO2-emission caused by road traffic in 2010. (Author/publisher)
