In the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, May 1998, two experienced investigative groups (Marottoli et al and Sims et al) explore risk factors for actual or potential adverse safety events among older drivers. Each study adds important information and suggests progress toward understanding the risk factor for vehicular crashes. The studies have design characteristics in common, but there are also many differences. This discussion addresses selected design and outcome issues with the aim of fostering enhancements for the next generation of studies needed to extend the progress reported here. (A)
