Abstract

The Road Safety Bureau of the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority has conducted observational surveys of seat belt wearing sice 1970. For the past three years, external consultants have been commissioned to conduct these surveys. In 1992 RAMIS Corporation Pty Ltd conducted the Seat Belt and Child Restraint Usage Study. This report presents a summary of the results of the 1992 survey to monitor seat belt wearing and child restraint usage by occupants of vehicles under two tonnes in the metropolitan areas of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong and major country centres in NSW. The survey reported here was conducted in twenty-eight sites in the Sydney metropolitan area, three sites in Newcastle, two in Wollongong and eleven in country areas. The statistical analysis of the survey data has shown that generally there has been a decrease in wearing rates compared to 1991, moving back to 1990 figures. (A)
