Abstract

In 1970 the Road Trauma Committee in Australia launched a public appeal in Melbourne for urgent action in relation to the mandatory wearing of seat belts. The initial "Belt up and live" theme was well received by the media because of the predictions and supporting facts and figures. Drivers deaths in 1972 were 28% less than in 1969 per 1000 vehicles registered in Victoria.
