Abstract

In four metropolitan areas of the United States, seat belt use was observed in 1, 628 late model cars equipped with air bags and manual belts and in 34, 223 cars equipped with manual seat belts only. Overall, 66 percent of drivers in cars with air bags wore seat belts compared to 63 percent of drivers in cars with manual belts only. There were very small or no differences in driver belt use in cars with and without air bags.
