Abstract

The review is based on studies relevant to seat belt use, reported between 1960 and 1970 from England, Finland, Sweden and the USA. Following a general discussion on the methodology used, the findings of the surveys are grouped according those variables most extensively studied. Studies of seat belt promoting campaigns and experiments in natural settings or in the laboratory are also discussed in the light of the specific methodological difficulties and weaknesses.
