Abstract

A short review of current initiatives in the United Kingdom for accident reduction is given. These include: (1) rearseat belts for all new cars from April 1987 onwards; (2) efforts underway to establish a European specification for a safer steering wheel; (3) in- depth accident studies; (4) work on car occupant protection in frontal impact; (5) side impact protection; (6) pedestrian safety; (7) motorcycle safety- anti lock braking system and leg protectors; (8) bus and coach safety; (9) underrun protection for goods vehicles and (10) a requirement for all new vehicles to be fitted with dim dip lighting.
