Abstract

This synthesis will be of use to commercial truck and bus carriers and others interested in improving commercial vehicle security in a post-September 11, 2001, environment. Prepared by Science Applications International Corporation, this synthesis reports on the status of terrorist-related security measures being taken in the commercial trucking and bus industries. The synthesis addresses key security threats to the commercial trucking and bus industries; risk management techniques available to assess potential threats; employee/driver hiring procedures; current security procedures at commercial truck and bus training schools; security procedures and technologies employed by carriers; issues associated with implementation and/or use of specific security measures; ongoing security research activities; and, to a limited extent, international experience with security measures for commercial truck and bus carriers. The synthesis is based on information collected through a literature search and surveys of commercial truck and bus carriers and other relevant organizations. (Author/publisher)
