Abstract

In this paper, the authors give an overview of a solar- and battery-powered system designed for enhancing safety at pedestrian and bicycle road crossings, and other key locations in the traffic infrastructure, using flashing warning lights and real-time radio communication. The system features three different sensor types for a reliable detection of the presence and direction of motion of pedestrians and bicyclists, and has very low installation and maintenance costs. The system with all its modules is currentlybeing evaluated in collaboration with the Swedish road administration at two test-sites in Sweden, and is showcased at the 2009 ITS World Congress
