Abstract

Taiwan had motorcycle ownership of 564 motorcycles per 1000 persons in 2004, and motorcycles account for more than 50 per cent of traffic on most major arterials in urban areas. Traffic safety is recognized as the main issue for motorcyclists, and to enhance this, the segregated traffic flow concept was promoted and implemented, resulting in significant improvements. This paper presents two major segregated countermeasures at intersections in Taiwan, which are two-stage left-turn regulation for left-turn motorcycles, and the head start holding zone for motorcycles at intersections. The design guideline and the performance analysis result from a before and after study are presented. These two measures have been spread across Taiwan and illustrate excellent improvements on motorcycle traffic safety and traffic performance of intersections.
