Abstract

From the lessons learnt through the Great Hanshin Earthquake, the Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation has developed a plan for a seismic observation system that targets obtaining seismic information in a timely manner, preventing secondary disasters and supporting recovery operations after an earthquake and as the first stage in such a system, developed a "Primary System" which commenced full operations in February 1997. This paper is concerned with the need, overview, configuration and future development of a seismic observation system for the Metropolitan Expressway.
