Abstract

Experience and some research in South Africa have led to specific recommendations regarding the most appropriate and cost-effective seal type; both for initial seals and for reseal purposes. The background and rationale for selection of appropriate seal types, as recommended in the National Guideline document TRH3, are discussed in the paper. Based on several case studies, additional guidelines are provided in the paper to cater for adjustments on site due to changing weather conditions, traffic accommodation, material properties, contractor's capability, turning actions and areas with different micro climates.
