Self-diagnosis of visible image sensor for the Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway Systems (AHS).

Abstract

An obstacle-collision avoidance service using an image sensor such as a CCD camera is used on curved sections of roads where accidents frequently occur. The aim is to improve traffic conditions by offering drivers with such information as the existence of obstacle ahead. However, as image sensors detect this information, the detection capability will be functionally disordered when the distance of vision deteriorates due to bad weather, etc. When obstacles cannot be detected in these circumstances, it will be more risky for the drivers who are convinced that there is no obstacle. Consequently, it is important for the system itself to be able to diagnose any malfunction of the sensors, and to inform drivers that the system is not functioning properly. This paper introduces a self-diagnosis function for the image sensors that operates by image processing, and confirms the validity of this self-diagnosis function, although it is still on the process of experiment.
