Abstract

Modern transport professionals need to bear in mind the fact that in many countries there are increasing numbers of senior drivers. A number of basic visual, mental, and physical capabilities that are essential for safe driving decline as a consequence of normal ageing. This means that highway enhancements need to take age into account. This article discusses measures, using 'human-centred' design and engineering practices, which should enable most people to extend their safe use of public roadways by many years. For the covering abstract see ITRD E139966.
