This paper describes the freight telematics applications in city logistics and freight centres which are part of SURFF, a project co-financed by the European Union. The telematics applications are conceived to support the path towards more sustainable freight transport within cities. The functional range covers the integration of dynamic traffic information for freight distribution planning, new cooperations between small and medium sized companies using advanced communication networks and servers, the tracking and tracing of containers, the strategical planning of new city distribution concepts using simulation and an information chain for multimodal transport. The introduction and integration of new technologies, communication infrastructures and application tools for an improved freight transportation is described within the participation of the relevant user groups: transport companies, public authorities and service providers.
