Abstract

This Fact Sheet reviews what needs to be taken into account when setting speed limits such as the physical resistance of the human body to crashes at different speeds, the function of roads and their type of users, and elements that help render speed limits credible. Speed limits should also be communicated properly to existing and new drivers. Also, the inclusion of speed limit information into digital road maps (used for satellite navigation) is becoming very important for the deployment of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) sytems.
