An account is given of a `Feet First' demonstration project carried out in Southampton which had the objective of making the road environment more friendly for pedestrians. The scheme also constributed to Southampton's integrated transport strategy. Details are given of the Shirley corridor, a busy shopping and business route which was chosen because of its relatively high number of accidents. Details are given of a) the public consultation, b) carriageway narrowing, c) central islands, d) planting and street furniture, e) carriageway surface changes, f) assistance for pedestrians and the handicapped and g) prevention of pavement parking. A particular feature was the improvement to facilities at bus stops.
Abstract
