Abstract

Intersections require high attention from the drivers. Many information sources need to be perceived while at the same time other important information is not available. This is why misinterpretation and inattentiveness are the major causes for accidents at intersections. To assist the driver, the Intersafe system already provides relevant information in the early phase while approaching an intersection. It thus helps avoiding an information overflow later when the driver is close to or on the intersection. An important precondition for these types of systems is that they need preciseknowledge about other traffic participants and the relevant traffic infrastructure. Wireless communication extends the possibilities of on-board sensors, however, a wide deployment of communication technology is necessary. To standardize the necessary protocols and promote the introduction of such communication systems, the Car-to-Car Communication Consortium has been founded.
