Abstract

In August 2003, the California PATH Program and the California Department of Transportation will demonstrate and showcase the operation of automated trucks and buses at free-flow highway speeds on the I-15 12-km High-Occupancy-Vehicle (HOV) facility in San Diego, California. The trucks, three Class 8 eighteen-wheelers and buses, two standard length 12 m, and an articulated one at 18 m will also be operating in platoons. Various maneuvers will be demonstrated to show how truck and bus automation systems could work. Transitions to and from automated driving will also be shown, plus electronic assistance or automation for trucks to precisely, efficiently and safely back up to loading docks or other tight confines. Rides on both the trucks and buses will also be offered.
