Abstract

Random breath alcohol testing (RBT) by the police was introduced on a trial basis in South Australia in 1981 The effectiveness of the program was evaluated. Roadside surveys conducted on 30.000 drivers by the research teams consistently yielded a much higher percentage of drivers above the legal BAC limit than did the data from enforcement activities. This difference was shown to relate to driver behaviour in the vicinity of RBT stations.
