Abstract

This paper presents the experimental results of side-fire ultrasonic vehicle detectors. Generally, non-intrusive detectors can be divided into two categories, overhead type and side-fire type. The more common overhead type requires detectors to be installed on an overpass or sign bridge. In the side-fire type, detectors are installed on a roadside structure. The side-fire configuration has many advantages over the overhead configuration. Installation and maintenance of detectors are very simple and cost effective. The traffic does not need to be disrupted during installation or maintenance. Also, the side-fire detectors do not significantly affect the aesthetics of highways. Only radar and video-image technologies are known to be used in side-fire configurations. In this paper, experimental results of a side-fire ultrasonic detector system, using a newly developed controller and signal processing unit, are presented. (A*)
