Abstract

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VEHICLE ENGINEERING MEASURES TO INCREASE PASSIVE SAFETY WILL BE EXAMINED BY MEANS OF EXPERIMENTAL SIMULATION UTILIZING DUMMIES. SUITABLE DUMMIES, WHICH CAN BE USED TO SIMULATE LOADINGS ON VEHICLE OCCUPANTS DURING REAL ACCIDENTS, MUST BE AVAILABLE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO TRANSFORM THESE RESULTS INTO REAL WORLD ACCIDENT SCENARIOS. WITHIN ITS WORKING GROUP 5 "BIOMECHANICS", THE GERMAN RESEARCH ASSOCIATION FOR AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY (FORSCHUNGSVEREINIGUNG AUTOMOBILTECHNIK EV, ABRREVIATED "FAT"), AN ASSOCIATION OF GERMAN AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS (VERBAND DER AUTOMOBILINDUSTRIE EV, ABBREVIATED "VDA"), HAS SET FOR ITSELF THE TASK OF DETERMINING WHETHER THE HSRI DUMMY OR THE APROD DUMMY, WHICH WERE NEWLY DEVELOPED ESPECIALLY FOR THE SIDE IMPACT, WILL BEST CORRELATE WITH THE CADAVERS BEHAVIOR. THIS IS A FURTHER STEP WITHIN THE EXTENSIVE FIELD OF BIOMECHANICS TO EVALUATE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PROTECTION CRITERIA AND OCCUPANT PROTECTION DURING A SIDE IMPACT. ALONG WITH THE HSRI- AND APROD DUMMIES, THE HYBRID II DUMMY WAS ALSO EXAMINED SINCE THIS DUMMY HAS BEEN EMPLOYED FOR SOME TIME IN EXPERIMENTAL SIMULATION OF SIDE IMPACTS.
