Abstract

In Switzerland there were only 10 roundabouts in 1965 and about 20 in 1987. However, since then, 70 new roundabouts have been constructed and 250 projects are under construction. This is partly due to an increasing realisation by Swiss town planners that roundabouts can be used as a traffic calming technique in residential areas, and defining public space. However, only a draft design guide exists in Switzerland. This paper describes the procedures adopted for elaborating upon the guide and presents the principal recommendations related to all the aspects of urban planning, geometric design and construction.
