Abstract

Three conceptions of the relation between perception and cognition are described; two of them belonging under each of two basic metatheoretical views. One, holding that perception and cognition are direct, is called ‘direct apprehension' metatheory; the other, holding that perception and cognition are forms of inference, is called 'mediation' metatheory. The third conception of the perception/cognition relation allows the 'direct apprehension' approach to perception and the 'mediation' approach to cognition.
