Abstract

Sight distance is a fundamental consideration in the safe design of roads and streets, especially at intersections in urban areas, where most accidents occur. Current standards developed in the U.S.A. and used in South Africa have primarily been developed for passenger cars, while sight distance requirements for heavy vehicles have been ignored. A further problem is that South African standards for intersections differ significantly from those applied in the U.S.A. These discrepancies continue to cause concern and serious attention should be given to establishing standards for sight distances at intersections in South Africa. (A)
