Abstract

This Design manual offers road designers and other interested parties extensive - in part, completely new - data to attain an optimum cycling - infrastructure in the Netherlands. One condition for increasing bicycle use is that the bicycle can be competitive with other transport modes (for example cars) over short distances. Therefore, the road infrastructure should make it possible to travel by bicycle directly and comfortably in an attractive, safe traffic environment. The manual describes how this bicycle - friendly infrastructure can be designed and realized. The design of a cycling - facility should be based on the interaction between cyclist, bicycle and cycling - facility. Seeking a balance between shape, function and between shape, function and use of cycling - facilities is a continuous thread throughout the manual.
