Abstract

SIGNLIFE is a PC-based decision support system for assessing road traffic sign effectiveness. It is an application of research conducted to establish the minimum retroreflective performance of sign reflective sheetings and their degradation rates. SIGNLIFE possess a rigid rule tree and customised user-interface with hypertext help facility. Each sign assessment involves the establishment of minimum sign retroreflectivity, comparison with the measured retroreflectivity and presentation of advice on sign effectiveness and remaining or replacement sign life. SIGNLIFE is aptly suited as a module for inclusion in computerised sign asset management systems, particularly for local government. government. The information it provides to engineers and managers will greatly assist in AAS27 asset valuations, in establishing rational and objective sign management systems, planning for sign replacement needs and to ensure a safer road network through a consistent and effective sign population.
