The Texas Transportation Institute has recently conducted research on sign visibility. The study focused on the relationship between sign reflectivity and the management, maintenance and design of signs. Researchers found that while new typeface enhances visibility for some types of signs, other types of signs are more visible with old lettering. Researchers also developed guidelines for gauging which overhead freeway signs need lighting and evaluated headlamp performance. A related study examined the use and spacing of delineators and Chevrons, or types of pavement markings, with the aim of simplifying the Texas Department of Transportation's maintenance procedures and policies.
