Abstract

This report presents measurements of low beam visibility distances to targets on dry and wet road surfaces. The variation of the road surfaces was considerable with respect to the specular reflection especially in wet conditions. Comprehensive physical measurements of the reflection properties of road surfaces in both dry and wet conditions are described. The interpretation of the result is thus that visibility distances to dark grey and brighter targets on the road are lengthened when the road becomes wet. This applies to driving on low beam with no oncoming traffic as well as with oncoming traffic. (A).
