The factors that influence whether people choose to travel by public transport are considered. There are five groups of barriers: information barriers, physical barriers, psychological barriers, cultural barriers and practical barriers. Measures to decrease the barriers to the use of public transport are outlined. These include passenger information, marketing, a clear line network and structure, coordinating public transport services, a frequent service, improving the physical shape of vehicles and terminals, bus priority, a simpler fare system and ticketing, and providing park-and-ride sites. Strategies for simplifying the public transport service, routes, fares and ticketing are discussed. The importance of market communication and regional cooperation is emphasised.
