Abstract

The literature relating to the use of simulators in driver training is reviewed. The types of driving simulators produced are discussed in detail to show the range of training devices available. On the basis of assessment of the research already conducted, widespread use of open-loop simulators in driver training programmes is not supported. However, the evaluations conducted on controlled driving tracks to date do not permit a judgement of their efficacy to be made.
