Abstract

The unrelenting growth and development of cities with high population densities witness the phenomenon of increasing traffic slowdown and congestion on their roads. Parking management in the city center is one of the tools often utilized by transport authorities to alleviate this problem. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore recognizes that the implementation of a Parking Guidance System (PGS), which utilizes roadside electronicVariable Message Signboards (VMS) to broadcast parking spaces availability information to motorists, is an effective and efficient method to bettermanage parking demand. This paper presents the experience for the conceptualization and implementation of the first PGS in Singapore's Marina Center area.
