Abstract

The introduction of intelligent transport systems (ITS) in Croatia from the first traffic management system introduced in 1997 is described. The country now has more than 800 km of highway and 45 km of tunnel integrated into a coherent, national traffic management system. The system comprises 21 traffic control centres (TCCs), more than 800 roadside and tunnel outstations, variable message signs, emergency roadside telephones, weather monitoring stations, CCTV and automatic incident detection ststems. Croatia adopted the German Technische Lieferbedingungen fuer Streckenstationen (TLS) standard, drop-insert optical fibre technology and Ethernet-based solutions. The deployment and integration philosophies are outlined. The topXview SCADA package, designed to meet the specific needs of TCC users, is described. The support provided by Telefon-Gradnja is outlined.
