In-situ California Bearing Ration CBR / Dynamic Cone Penetrometer DCP relationship for soft soils : Malaysian experience.

Abstract

The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) test for the determination of in situ California Bearing Ration (CBR) has been widely used in some parts of the world. Besides its simplicity, it is a quick method of obtaining the insitu strengths of pavement layers without having to excavate the existing pavement as in the CBR test. This is especially advantageous in Malaysia where heavy unexpected rainfall has often flooded the trial pit before the CBR test could be carried out. This paper describes the further work carried out to develop the insitu CBR/DCP relationship for these soils and the difficulties encountered in obtaining reliable data as well as methods that were adopted to overcome that problem.
