This paper considers a length of difficult road on which there had been many vehicle crashes. The road had been surfaced with porous asphalt; recently part of its length has been resurfaced with calcined bauxite. Trends in the number of vehicle crashes are examined leading to consideration of the effectiveness of porous asphalt in reducing crashes, the effectiveness of calcined bauxite in reducing crashes, and the relationship between the skid resistance of a road surface and the number of crashes.
