Abstract

The primary objectives of the Sixth Road Project Bridge Component, centered in Mindanao and Luzon, are to: inspect and determine requirements for repair, replacement or seismic upgrading and prioritization of modifications for approximately 412 bridges; upgrade seismic resistance of the highest priority bridges, approximately 270 existing bridges, to acceptable levels; totally replace approximately 68 badly deteriorated bridges using the new DPWH Standard Bridge Designs; and provide for technology transfer to local consultants and the DPWH to allow for their future participation in seismic upgrading projects in other areas of the Philippines. This paper will: provide an overview of the Sixth Road Project Bridge Component; identify the key seismic deficiencies in various common bridge structures; and discuss the techniques employed in seismic upgrading of bridges as applied on the Sixth Road Project Bridge Component.
