Abstract

Equations recommended for determining riprap size to protect bridge piers are compared to experimental results from small-scale model studies conducted in laboratory flumes. Adjustments to the equations are recommended from the analysis of laboratory data, as are usesof the equations to protect circular and rectangular bridge piers from scour. This paper appears in transportation research record no. 1290, Third bridge engineering conference, march 10-13, 1991, denver, colorado, volume 2.
