Abstract

This article discusses some of the complex and interdependent factors affecting the tyre-runway adhesion. The main factors which influence the amount of grip between tyre and runway surface are: 1) the type of surface and its texture; 2) the tyre factors, i.e. pattern, load, inflation pressure, construction and tread material; 3) weather conditions, and 4) the braking system of the aircraft. No account is taken of other methods of decelerating aircraft such as reverse thrust or other emergency methods at the end of the runway.
