Abstract
An attempt is made to show what can be expected of today's, driver in terms of his skill and judgement. Serious questions arise concerning the role of the driver in transportation systems of the future, at least in terms of his role as vehicle controller. Special emphasis is laid on information acquisition in driving and eye- movement research and the new Head- Up Display is described.
