Abstract

Driver fatigue and in-vehicle distraction are responsible for many accidents. Australian company, Seeing Machines has developed a computer vision tool called faceLAB to identify the key factors contributing to fatigue and distraction. The system measures driver visual behaviour using a pair of video cameras connected via video image framegrabbers to a computer. The system can measure the eye-gaze direction and can be used with people wearing sunglasses. Simulator studies have been conducted to study driver fatigue. The PERCLOS algorithm, which utilises eyelid behaviour, has been developed. Delphi has used faceLAB technology to develop a Workload Management system for its Integrated Safety Systems concept car. Designers are designing car interiors to reduce the risk of distraction away from the road. For the covering abstract see ITRD E115762.
