Abstract

This paper describes a survey undertaken to examine the relationship between fatigue and accidents in the case of male car drivers. The questionnaire asked for details of the driver's characteristics, driving habits, incidents of sleepiness and information about any accidents. The results are analysed and the role of fatigue assessed. Reasons for falling asleep at the wheel are discussed. A model is developed relating accidents to fatigue. Company car drivers are identified as being particularly at risk. Possible countermeasures are discussed.
