Slow pedestrians-walking speeds and walking habits of elderly people.

Abstract

Most standards and also the greatest part of the literature only seemed to cover young, healthy and fast people. A study was made of slow pedestrians; here defined as 70 years or older. The results of the interviews indicate that these older pedestrians are rather active with an average walk of 30-35 minutes a day. Their confidence in pedestrian traffic signals seems rather high although most signals are set at higher speeds than many of these old pedestrians can manage.
