Abstract

OUTREACH, San Jose, California has recently developed and deployed Smart Paratransit, a paratransit operation in Santa Clara County, California. During its first year of operation, this paratransit support system produced a saving of almost $500,000, or roughly $0.27 per passenger mile. The foundation of the new system is a navigable map database from Navigation Technologies. The NavTech database enabled OUTREACH to apply a variety of new capabilities in paratransit vehicle routing, scheduling, dispatching and tracking. With its paratransit support system, OUTREACH has reached compliance with U.S. laws regarding the availability of public transit services to disabled individuals. Additionally, OUTREACH has greatly increased customer satisfaction while the number of paratransit clients has been continuously growing.
