The interaction between speed, the space available around a vehicle and collision are discussed. The role of driver attention in accidents is discussed and it is suggested that driver attitude is a major factor in accidents. Problems highlighted include drivers overestimating their ability, assuming that secondary safety features in cars make them safe, assuming that nothing can go wrong on a clear road, believing that speed limits are too low, or that they can avoid accidents by always driving slowly. Contradictory studies showing a reduction in fatalities with either the lowering or removal of speed limits are discussed. It is suggested that raising awareness of the effects of speed is important.
