Abstract

This issue of Current Topics includes over 70 abstracts of some of the published literature (reports, conference papers, books and journal articles) on recent developments in "smart" technology for transport, and the potential applications and benefits for road users and operators. Amongst the topics included are the development of the contactless smartcard and automatic vehicle recognition for urban transport debiting (eg fare collection, parking payment) and for motorway tolling and surveillance. Also included are abstracts on smart technology applied to intelligent sensors for traffic control, collision avoidance, priority at traffic signals and the interactive highway as part of the intelligent transport system, as well as many other applications. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 1994 and 1997. Much of the relevant English language literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Road Research Documentation (IRRD) database.
