Abstract

This issue of Current Topics includes over 70 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on recent developments in "smart" technology for transport, and the potential applications and benefits for road users and operators. Amongst the topics included are the development of contactless smartcard and automatic vehicle recognition for urban transport debiting (eg Fare collection, parking payment) and for motorway tolling and surveillance. Also included are abstracts on smart technology applied to intelligent sensors for traffic control, collision avoidance, priority at traffic signals and the interactive highway as part of the intelligent transport system, as well as many other applications. These items have been selected from the material added to the TRL Library Database between 1999 and 2001. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
