The New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are sponsors of a new publication called the "Smart Transportation Guidebook: Planning and Designing Highways and Streets thatSupport Sustainable and Livable Communities." This article summarizes this publication, which emphasizes context-sensitive roadway design. It builds on existing context-sensitive design practice to address transportation challenges and foster sustainable communities. Although the publicationreflects local conditions in New Jersey and Pennsylvania it is based on many design principles that can be applied universally.
